Construction Technology

 

Class Overview: Construction Technology is an instructional program that prepares an individual for employment or continued education in the occupations of Carpentry, Electrical Wiring, Masonry, or Plumbing. Construction Technology is a basic course that teaches the fundamentals of safety, tools, math, and basic carpentry, electrical, masonry, and plumbing skills.

How much you learn in this class is directly related to the effort you put in, and the attitude you have towards this class.  There are a lot of neat activities we can do, but a lot of it rides on you.  I hope that after taking this class, you will understand basic knowledge of tools and materials use in the construction industry.  

 

        Objectives: 

  1. Introduce and master shop/construction safety, precaution, and awareness.
  2. Reinforce basic math skills by the incorporation of practical application.
  3. Identify, describe, and understand hand and power tools used throughout the construction industry.
  4. Develop the fundamental knowledge needed to read and accurately interpret construction blueprints.
  5. Identify construction materials and describe their uses.
  6. Introduce the students to basic skills and knowledge in fields of Rigging, Carpentry, Electrical Wiring, Masonry, and Plumbing.

Safety:  The safety of the students is of our utmost concern. Each student will be taught basic safety and will be required to pass the safety exam with a score of 100% before entering the shop to work. Safety glasses are required to enter into the shop for any reason. Hard hats will be worn as applicable. Equipment operation will only be done under direct supervision of the instructor.

  4. Use time, tools, and materials appropriately.
  5. Practice professionalism.
  6. Learn.

    Internet PolicyWe will use the internet for activities and research from time to time.  Common sense needs to be used when using the Internet, if you are not sure whether a website is school appropriate, it is probably not.  Ask before you use a questionable site. Refer to the district website for a full explanation of the school board’s policy.

    Grading Scale: The final grades are determined by the grading scale listed below.  Grade percentages that are between letter grades will be rounded. (i.e. 89.7% rounded up to A-, 89.3% rounded to a B+)          

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Attendance Policy and Make-Up Work:  Attendance is a must in the classroom just as it would be in the workplace.  All absences will be dealt with according to the student handbook.

    1. Excused Absences:  All students with an excused absence will be given 2 days for each missed class period in order to make up class work and assignments starting the day of return.  Once the time period has passed, unless other arrangements have been discussed between the student and the teacher, all work will be docked one letter grade for each day it is late.  After 5 days late any work turned in will receive a zero. 

     

    1. Unexcused absence:  General work missed may be completed, but will only be given half credit.  Refer to the student handbook for more information.

     

    1. It is your responsibility to get this work and fill out a homework request sheet.  I will not have time at the beginning of every class to help you with missing work/notes.  If this is the case, you need to see me before or after school.
