In this course, you will encounter reading and listening in French. You'll be asked to discuss, write and speak in French using the vocabulary and grammar structures practiced in the course.

Course Goal Statement

Upon successful completion of this course, you will understand the basic food habits of the French and basic family structures of the French, as well as French food and family vocabulary.

You will be reading and listening to French written for native speakers. I’ve chosen readings and listenings that are easier to comprehend or were written using simple French, but you will encounter unfamiliar structures and vocabulary. This is by design. Take those moments when you encounter unfamiliar things to take careful notes and contact me when you have questions!

Grading Policy

You are expected to meet all deadlines, as this class builds on itself, but there may be times when you will need to turn work in late or make up work.

If this happens, you are expected to complete a late assignment report. Indicate the reason for the late work and fill out both sides of the sheet. Sign and date this statement and turn in your late work. The late work will normally be accepted without a penalty within two weeks of the assigned due date. However, if a statement of late work is not turned in or if late work becomes a repetitive behavior, additional steps will be taken to help you meet deadlines.

There are some “time-sensitive” grades that are taken at a particular time as “snapshots” of student behaviors, the following have a one-week grace period to turn in:

  • Monthly study proof
  • Monthly binder check

Retakes

Students are encouraged to retake assessments. You may be required to complete additional work and/or attend a help session prior to a retake. In all cases the second score will count as the current grade even when that grade is lower. You must notify me within 24 hours of the assessment that you wish to retake the assessment. Retakes must be completed prior to the end of the unit or the original grade will stand.

Missing Work

All missing work must be completed two weeks prior to the end of the unit.

Accessibility

The site and the course were designed with ADA in mind. Videos are provided with links to transcripts or closed captions when available.

Due to the nature of assessing listening, there are some videos which do not have transcripts or closed captions. If you have any hearing impairments, you will need to contact me before the course begins. Interpersonal communication and interpretive listening assessments will need to be modified.

Below is a list of assignments and due dates. Some assignments have no points associated with them. They are required activities.

Unless explicitly noted as practice, all of the course content items in the modules area are required for you to learn both the content, vocabulary, grammar and structures.
